Former Gujarat CM and Congress veteran Madhavsinh Solanki passes away

ormer Gujarat Chief Minister and Congress veteran Madhavsinh Solanki passed away at his residence in Gandhinagar on Saturday at the age of 93. He served four times as the Chief Minister of Gujarat and was the longest-serving CM before Narendra Modi. He also served as the External Affairs Minister of India from June 1991 to March 1992.

On the demise of Mr Solanki several leaders condoled his death. "Shri Madhavsinh Solanki Ji was a formidable leader, playing a key role in Gujarat politics for decades. He will be remembered for his rich service to society. Saddened by his demise. Spoke to his son, Bharat Solanki Ji and expressed condolences. Om Shanti," tweeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his Twitter account. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi too expressed grief by writing on his Twitter handle, "Saddened by the demise of Shri Madhavsinh Solanki. He will be remembered for his contribution in strengthening the Congress ideology & promoting social justice. Heartfelt condolences to his family and friends."

Mr Solanki is known for his move of bringing together the KHAM (Kshatriya, Harijan/ Dalit, Adivasi, Muslim) to form a social coalition in order to gain electoral upperhand in 1980s. Mr Solanki's son, Bharat Solanki is a former Gujarat Congress Chief and Union Minister.
