T

he deadline for the collection of toll charges at the National Highways using FASTag has now been extended to February 15, 2021 by the Ministry of Road transport and highway (MoRTH). Originally the deadline was January 1, 2021 and under the original deadline the National Highway Authority of India (NIAH) was slated to switch over completely to FASTags payment at toll plazas from January 1 onwards which also means that FASTags needs to be amended on all commercial vehicles and four wheelers.

The government will further be converting all lanes barring one lane on each side to be a dedicated FASTag lane and to discourage cash transactions the vehicles using the non FASTag lanes will be liable to pay double the normal toll fee amount. These moves by the government will prompt users to use the FASTag lanes that promises smoother movement of the traffic at the toll plazas and will also save fuel in return.

The FASTag collection at the toll plazas are mad compulsory for all four wheelers to promote digital payments and FASTags were made compulsory to all new vehicles sold after December 1, 2017 and should be retrofitted by the manufacturer or the dealer level before the customer is delivered the product. The Center Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 have been amended for the same and an updated Notification from the MoRTH reveals that FASTags will be mandatory for getting a third party vehicle insurance and will come into effect from April 1, 2021. of India (NIAH) was slated to switch over completely to FASTags payment at toll plazas from January 1 onwards which also means that FASTags needs to be amended on all commercial vehicles and four wheelers.
