he Singhu border every day is seeing more turn up of women protestors at the farmers protest in the last few days. A non-governmental organization (NGO) named Basicshit which works for sanitation issues is now installing bio-toilets which are made out of recycled materials to ensure that the women don't have to worry about lack of basic amenities. Days after the farmers camped in November last year at multiple border points of Delhi protesting against the reforms introduced by the center in the 3 farm laws many female protestors had to return home due to unavailability of clean toilets and bathing spaces.
Ashwini Agarwal the founder of the NGO Basicshit said, “This is the first time we are doing a project at a protest site. Someone sent me a picture of a street here which was completely filled with fecal matter. So, we thought we can come here and do something. He added, every toilet will have a 10 foot deep pit and to remove the odor sawdust and charcoal will be used, the pits have been dug on the roadside and from multiple vendors across the country the raw material has been sourced. The cost of each toilet is around 60000 rupees and around 100 women and specially-abled people have been using the bio-toilet every day
The NGO to help build more such toilets have now initiated crowd funding. Shahj Umang Singh from Basicshit said that the farmers at the protest site have come forward to dig pits and install the toilets. They have also given us tin canisters for making urinals for the men as the idea to make a urinal for men out of empty tin canisters emerged at the protest site as the farmers had carried ghee and oil from the protest site.
The farmers are protesting at the Delhi border for more than a month now demanding the center to repeal the three farm laws enacted as they fear that the new laws will eliminate the MSP and the APMC system of the government and will leave them at the mercy of the giant corporate firms.
