rime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 16th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas convention virtually. The event is a prime event of the Ministry of External Affairs which provided an important platform to engage and connect with overseas Indians. The PM reflected the nation’s transformation from importing medical devices to a nation that is now ready with two “Made-in-India” COVID-19 vaccines to “save humanity.”

PM Modi said “India used to import PPE kits, masks, ventilators and testing kits from outside but today our nation is self-reliant. Today India is ready to save humanity with two ‘Made in India’ COVID-19 vaccines.” He also spoke about campaigns in India to empower the poorer section of the community which is now a discussion occurring globally.

During the past year of turmoil in dealing with the pandemic PM Modi praised the Indians living overseas and for the roles that they played at the toughest of times. “This is our tradition. This is our soil’s culture. The world’s trust in Indians is strengthening in terms of social and political leadership,” said PM Modi. The new President of Suriname, Chandika Prasad Santokhi was the chief guest of this year’s Pravasi event and PM Modi cited that the Suriname's President is the glittering example of this method of services among the Indians living abroad.
