Ghar Wapsi' only after 'Law Wapsi': protesting farmers

T

he eighth round of talks between the government representatives and the farmer leaders did not result in any concrete conclusion to break the over one-month long deadlock. The next round of talks will take place on January 15. Farmer protesters have maintained their stand on repeal of three farm laws from the beginning while the Centre is ready for a proposal to change the particular clauses of the laws but is determined not to withdraw the three agricultural laws.

One of the farmer leaders said at the meeting that was held on Friday that 'ghar wapsi' will happen only if the government does 'law wapsi' which means that they are adamant about their demands and will not return home unless the Centre repeals the three contentious agricultural laws. All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee (AIKSCC) member Kavitha Kuruganti, said that the government has told unions it cannot and will not repeal these laws.

The government has asserted that the farm reform laws have been backed by the farmers in various states. The meeting was held at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi which started at around 2:30 pm. Till now, over 60 farmers have died, most of them, because of extreme weather conditions.
