oday, An earthquake of magnitude 6.4 hit Assam  according to the National Center for Seismology. Heavy tremors were felt by people in parts of the northeast and in north Bengal as well. While no harm to citizens has been reported, photos depict crack in walls and broken windows in houses.

Strong wave of tremors were repeatedly felt in many parts of the northeast area and neighboring countries such as Bhutan, people came out of their homes, as per  news sources. The epicentre of the earthquake was near Dhekiajuli townand nearly about 140 km (86 miles) north of Guwahati. The earthquake felt at 7:51 am around at a depth of 17 km from the surface which was very high.

Prime Minister led Narendra Modi assured that, he had a word with Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and promised help from the Centre. Mr Sonowal wrote on social media that "Big earthquake hits Assam. I pray for the well being of all and urge everyone to stay alert. Taking updates from all districts," he tweeted.
